From 10th to 14th May, Hungarian Commandery of the Johanniterorden celebrated its centenary with a conference on the Order and the Thanksgiving church service. Our Hungarian member was joined by Susann Kraft from Johanniter Germany in the frame of the JOIN Volunteer Swap. Here is what she reports:
Üdvözöljük! (Welcome!)
Once again, four days of Volunteer Swap have flown by and I am looking back on a really special weekend in Hungary. What was the best part of those past four days, I am asking myself and I immediately know that this is a question that won’t be easy to answer. Because traveling as part of the JOIN Volunteer Swap always means coming back home with a heart full of inspiring encounters and experiences and a head full of thoughts that all have to be carefully sorted through afterwards. ☺️
The reason for my trip was the centenary celebration of the Hungarian Commandery of the Johanniterorden that took place in Budapest from May 10th to May 12th, 2024. For this occasion, various events were planned throughout the weekend and I went there as an organisational helper with hosting.
Zsòfia Porcsalmy, youth leader of Johannita Segitö Szolgálat in Hungary, warmly welcomed me at Budapest airport on Thursday evening and on the way to her home we were exchanging many Johanniter stories already. Johannita Segitö Szolgálat was founded in 1989 and has since developed programmes that support religious institutions and home care services. It operates through eleven regional organisations, organises camps for adolescents and persons with disabilities, and also provides humanitarian aid in- and outside Hungary.
On Friday morning we did a lovely walk through the beautiful Hungarian capital with its historic houses and unique views.
On Friday afternoon the Knights of the Order, their families and other guests arrived for a conference at the Residence Kàrolyi-Csekonics, an impressive historic building in the middle of Budapest. During registration, there were many Hungarian voices, but you could hear a number of German voices, too. As head of the order, the Herrenmeister, Oskar Prinz von Preußen, also attended this very special event. There were various greetings and spiritual impulses, but there was also a detailed discussion about the current status and future of the Johanniterorden. During the breaks and dinner in the evening, there was also time for personal encounters and interesting conversations.
The highlight of the centenary was the celebratory church service on Saturday morning. About 70 knights ceremoniously entered the Lutheran Church on Deák Square with the order’s flag leading the way. The guests stood in amazement in their benches, and you could literally feel the historical significance of this day. After the service, there was plenty of time for old and new encounters again at the stand-up lunch in the inner courtyard, which continued at the elegant gala dinner in the famous Gundel restaurant in the evening. Between the main course and dessert, we listened to the wonderful classical music of a string trio and the evening then ended on the balcony of the restaurant with good conversations in a cosy summer evening atmosphere.
In general, the beautiful weather suited the weekend’s festivities perfectly.
On Sunday morning my marvellous host Zsòfia took time for me again and together we hiked for a while in Normafa Park and enjoyed the view over Budapest from the high observation tower. I tried the famous chimney cake and after a short ride in the historic subway and a walk from Hero Square to Vajdahunyad Castle, it was unfortunately time to drive back to the airport again.
Now my beginning question still remains though at the end of my report:
What was the best part of my trip to the Hungarian Johanniter? Somehow, I am still not sure, how to answer it properly…
Maybe it was the celebratory church service on Saturday, which was just so solemn and somehow made me be aware again of the deep historical roots not only of the Johanniterorden but also of the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe. Maybe it was the kindness and the chance of meeting so many very different people, the feeling of being welcomed and part of the big Johanniter family all over the world. Either way: I am deeply grateful for this wonderful and multifaceted time in beautiful Budapest, and I am sure it will resonate with me for a long, long time. ❤️

“Wieder sind vier Tage Volunteer Swap wie im Flug vergangen und ich blicke zurück auf ein wirklich ganz besonderes Wochenende in Ungarn. Was war das schönste Erlebnis von allen, frage ich mich und weiß schon gleich, dass sich diese Frage für mich nicht so einfach beantworten lassen wird. Denn unterwegs sein im Rahmen des Volunteer Swap heißt gleichzeitig auch immer nach Hause zurückkommen mit einem übervollen Herzen, wunderbaren Begegnungen und Erlebnissen und einem Kopf, in dem all das erstmal wieder in Ruhe sortiert werden muss. ☺️
Anlass meiner Reise war die Jahrhundertfeier der ungarischen Genossenschaft des Johanniterordens in Budapest vom 10.05. bis 12.5.2024. Aus diesem Anlass waren verschiedene Veranstaltungen über das ganze Wochenende verteilt geplant und ich durfte mich als Helferin bei der Organisation der Veranstaltungen nützlich machen. Zsòfia Porcsalmy, Jugend-Leiterin der Johannita Segitö Szolgálat in Ungarn begrüßte mich am Donnerstag Abend herzlich am Flughafen Budapest und schon auf dem Weg zu ihr nach Hause tauschten wir viele Johanniter-Geschichten miteinander aus. Johannita Segitö Szolgálat wurde 1989 gegründet und hat seitdem viele Programme zur Unterstützung religiöser Institutionen und häuslicher Pflegedienste entwickelt. Sie ist in elf regionalen Organisationen tätig, organisiert Camps für Jugendliche und Menschen mit Behinderungen und leistet auch humanitäre Hilfe innerhalb und außerhalb Ungarns.
Am Freitag vormittag nahmen wir uns Zeit für einen gemütlichen Spaziergang durch die wunderschöne ungarische Hauptstadt mit ihren historischen Häusern und einzigartigen Ausblicken.
Der Freitag nachmittag begann mit der Ankunft der Ordens-Ritter, ihrer Familien und anderer geladener Gäste zu einer Konferenz in der Residence Kàrolyi-Csekonics, einem eindrucksvollen historischen Gebäude mitten in Budapest. Bei der Registrierung der ankommenden Gäste konnte man neben ungarisch auch etliche deutsche Stimmen hören. Auch der Herrenmeister, Oskar Prinz von Preußen, war zu diesem besonderen Ereignis gekommen. Es gab verschiedene Grußworte und geistliche Impulse, es wurde aber auch ausführlich über den Ist-Stand und die Zukunft des Johanniterordens diskutiert. In den Pausen und beim Essen am Abend fand sich Zeit für viele persönliche Begegnungen und interessante Gespräche.
Der Höhepunkt der Jahrhundertfeier war dann allerdings am Samstag Vormittag der Festgottesdienst. Ungefähr 70 Ritter zogen feierlich mit der Ordensfahne voran in die evangelisch-lutherische Kirche am Deák-Platz ein. Die Festgäste standen staunend in ihren Bänken und man konnte die historische Bedeutung dieses Tages förmlich spüren. Im Anschluss an den Gottesdienst war beim Stehimbiss im Innenhof wieder viel Zeit für alte und neue Begegnungen, die sich beim vornehmen Gala-Dinner im berühmten Gundel-Restaurant am Abend fortsetzten. Zwischen Hauptgang und Nachtisch lauschten wir der wunderbaren klassischen Musik eines Streicher-Trios und auf dem Balkon des Restaurants ließ sich der Abend bei guten Gesprächen und lauschigen Temperaturen vortrefflich beenden.
Überhaupt passte das schöne Wetter ganz wunderbar zu den Feierlichkeiten des Wochenendes.
Am Sonntag nahm sich meine liebe Gastgeberin Zsòfia noch einmal Zeit für mich und gemeinsam wanderten wir im Normafa Park, genossen auf einem hohen Aussichtsturm die Aussicht über Budapest, ich probierte den bekannten Chimney-Cake und nach einer kurzen Fahrt in der historischen U-Bahn und einem Spaziergang vom Hero-Square zur Burg Vajdahunyad war es leider auch schon wieder Zeit, zum Flughafen zu fahren.
Am Ende bleibt nun für mich aber immer noch die anfängliche Frage: Was war wohl das Schönste an meiner Reise zu den ungarischen Johannitern? Und ich muss immer noch ziemlich lang überlegen…
Vielleicht war es der Festgottesdienst am Samstag, der einfach so feierlich war und mir irgendwie wieder die tiefen historischen Wurzeln der Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe bewusst gemacht hat. Vielleicht war es aber auch die Freundlichkeit und die Begegnung mit so vielen ganz unterschiedlichen Menschen, das Gefühl, überall auf der Welt Teil der Johanniter-Familie zu sein. So oder so: ich bin von Herzen dankbar für diese kurze Zeit im schönen Budapest und sie wird noch lang in mir nachhallen, da bin ich mir sicher. ❤️”
