The annual Bristol Balloon Fiesta is one of the largest international hot-air balloon festivals in Europe, attracting around 80,000 visitors each year. Johannes and Lara from Johanniter Germany travelled to Bristol to join the team of St John Ambulance, which provided treatment centres, foot patrols and ambulances across the event from 10th to 13th August.
Johannes reports about his four days of medical service with St John Ambulance in English and German:

My name is Johannes (or Joe, which is easier to pronounce in English), I’m a 5th-year medical student from Hannover, Germany. As a sideline, I’m working in the Ambulance Service and volunteering for ‘Johanniter’ in my hometown Oldenburg.
This August I did a JOIN Volunteer Swap and got the chance to work with our British fellows from St John Ambulance (SJA) in Bristol. I participated in the medical service at ‘Bristol International Balloon Fiesta’ and had a great time.
Starting with the event itself, the idea of releasing about a hundred hot air balloons at the same time is as good as simple. The balloons looked incredible, especially during the ‘Night glow’, where they got lightened up to music. Thousands of visitors, especially the children, enjoyed the fiesta and had a good time at the fun fair with all its food and rides.
But I think there weren’t many people who enjoyed the event as much as I did because it was such a great pleasure working with the people from St John Ambulance. They provided a well-prepared and professional medical service with amazing volunteers. I especially admired the fantastic teamwork, everyone was polite and kind, regardless of the qualification. So, I had the chance to work with First Aiders, EACs, Paramedics, Doctors and even a HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) crew who supported us with a major incident. I always felt like a part of the team and was allowed to work according to my German qualification and skills. Thereby, the SJA volunteers showed me everything and were so patient with answering all my questions.
During my shifts, I worked in the treatment centre under the direction of experienced nurses, as a foot patrol at the event site and I third-crewed an ambulance, so that I even got some insights into one of Bristol’s emergency rooms. Moreover, I learned very much about the English healthcare system, ambulance service, St John Ambulance, volunteering in the UK, the history of Bristol and so much more. Even the patients, that I treated, were very kind, thankful and curious as to why I was wearing grey and orange instead of green and black clothes.
I also really enjoyed the delicious English food provided by the event kitchen of St. John and its fantastic chef. In my free time, I had the chance to discover Bristol, a beautiful old English town, which is definitely worth a second visit.
So, after five interesting days full of new experiences, I travelled back to Germany with a good picture of similarities and differences between English ‘St John Ambulance’ and German ‘Johanniter’. And I’m feeling like a little part of both organizations now.
I can totally recommend doing a volunteer swap, an experience I will never forget. Maybe even some of Bristol’s SJA fellows will support us with events in Germany in the future.”

Bericht über vier Tage Sanitätsdienst auf der „Bristol International Balloon Fiesta“ – von Johannes Lahring
Mein Name ist Johannes (in England wurde ich wegen der einfacheren Aussprache Joe genannt), ich bin Medizinstudent in Hannover. Neben dem Studium arbeite ich im Rettungsdienst und engagiere mich ehrenamtlich bei den Johannitern in meiner Heimatstadt Oldenburg.
Diesen August habe ich einen „JOIN Volunteer Swap“ gemacht und hatte so die Chance mit unseren britischen Kolleginnen und Kollegen von St. John Ambulance (SJA) aus Bristol zusammenzuarbeiten. Konkret habe ich am Sanitätsdienst auf der „International Bristol Balloon Fiesta“ teilgenommen und hatte eine tolle Zeit!
Angefangen bei der Veranstaltung selbst, ist die Idee hundert Heißluftballons gleichzeitig steigen zu lassen so einfach wie genial. Die Ballons sahen spektakulär aus, vor allem beim „Night Glow“, wo sie im Dunkeln passend zur Musik ihre Flammen gezündet haben. Tausende von Besuchern, vor allem die Kinder genossen die Fiesta und hatten viel Spaß auf dem zugehörigen Jahrmarkt mit vielen Buden und Fahrgeschäften.
Aber ich glaube, nur wenige haben die Fiesta so sehr genossen wie ich, da ich das Vergnügen hatte mit den Leuten von St. John Ambulance zusammenzuarbeiten. Diese haben einen gut vorbereiteten und professionellen Sanitätsdienst mit tollen Freiwilligen gestellt. Ich habe vor allem das gute Teamwork bewundert, alle waren total höflich und freundlich zu jedem, unabhängig von der Qualifikation. So hatte ich die Gelegenheit mit „First Aiders“ (dt. Sanitätshelfer), „EACs“ (= Emergency Ambulance Crew, dt. Rettungssanitäter), „Paramedics“ (dt. Notfallsanitäter) und sogar einer Hubschrauberbesatzung, die wir bei einem Einsatz anforderten, zusammenzuarbeiten. Dabei haben mir die HelferInnen von SJA alles gezeigt und geduldig alle meine Fragen beantwortet.
In meinen Schichten habe ich in der Sanitätsstation/UHS, die von erfahrenen Krankenschwestern geleitet wurde, als Fußstreife oder als Praktikant auf dem Rettungswagen gearbeitet. Durch letzteres hatte ich sogar Gelegenheit eine von Bristols Notaufnahmen von innen zu sehen. Ich habe total viel über das englische Gesundheitssystem, den dortigen Rettungsdienst, St. John Ambulance, Ehrenamt in der UK, die Geschichte von Bristol und so viel mehr gelernt. Selbst die PatientInnen waren sehr nett, dankbar und neugierig, warum ich grau-orange statt grün-schwarz getragen habe.
Auch das englische Essen aus der Feldküche der SJA und ihren tollen Köchinnen habe ich sehr genossen. In meiner Freizeit konnte ich mir Bristol ansehen, eine wunderschöne alte englische Stadt, die definitiv einen zweiten Besuch wert ist.
Nach fünf interessanten Tagen voller neuer Erfahrungen bin ich zurück nach Deutschland geflogen, im Gepäck ein guter Überblick über Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen britischem „St. John Ambulance“ und deutschen „Johannitern“. Und ich fühle mich jetzt als kleiner Teil beider Organisationen.
Einen „Volunteer Swap“ kann ich definitiv empfehlen, ich persönlich werde diese Erfahrung nie vergessen. Vielleicht kommen in Zukunft sogar HelferInnen aus Bristol, um uns bei Diensten in Deutschland zu unterstützen.
